For this publication, I set out to create a “REPLICA” inspired by the Maison Martin Margiela book, applying Margiela’s own unique philosophy of the replica to reimagine the book in a fresh, personal way. Rather than merely reproducing the original work, my aim was to embrace Margiela’s concept of a replica, which involves drawing on existing materials, be they old garments, fabrics, or random objects from past collections, and transforming them into something new by introducing fresh or old accessories, adding layers of meaning and reinterpretation. In the same spirit, I approached this project by scanning the original pages of the book and integrating my own visual elements, primarily through the use of collage, a method also prominently used in the book itself.
This process allowed me to bring new life to the original work while maintaining some of its recognizable aspects. The collaging of new and old images creates a dynamic interplay, where my additions coexist with the original content, resulting in something that is not an exact reproduction but a creative hybrid. I sought to maintain a balance between Margiela’s original vision and my own, blending the familiar with the new to offer a reinterpretation that stays true to his definition of a replica. Like Margiela’s reconstructed garments, this project is about layering and evolving the original into something that feels simultaneously familiar and new. By keeping certain key elements intact, I honor the source material while creating something that reflects both my personal perspective and the essence of Margiela’s creative ethos.
